In the U.S., approximately 2.5 million children are being reared by a grandparent or other relative because their birth parents are unable to care for them. Chances are there are a few (or several) such families in your congregation, quietly and nobly navigating circumstances that were, in most cases, unforeseen, often abrupt, and sometimes precipitated by tragedy.
